Shida Residence in Yui Shuku on the Old Tokaido

The Historical Marker reads:

()

An only1tanuki translation:

"An Old Time Merchant Residence
(Shida Residence)

This was the beginning of Yui Shuku for travelers coming from Kambara to Yui on their trip from Edo to Tokyo, having just entered the Eastern Gate and following the square angled road.
The Shida Family has a long history, taking the store name of "Komeya," or "Rice Store," even now leaving the feeling of an old merchant residence.
Through the doorway there is still an earthen-floored entrance, front counter, box stairs, etc.

Side Notes
() A Square Angled Road is typically a square angle in the shape of a "box," found after a gate, used to slow down the movement into a secured area. In castles, these formations would have two gates, positioned at right angles, enclosed by walls.
() Hakokaidan are storage chests that have been stacked to form a set of stairs. They are not typically one piece that has been built as a permanent fixture to the building.
Heisei 16 is 2004
